Turmeric is a golden spice from the rhizome of the plant Curcuma longa , used for food preparations and giving color since ancient times. Weboccurring diarylheptanoids of various types have been described. This review covers reports on naturally occurring 1,7-diarylheptanoids appearing in major journals from 1953 to October 1993. Leading references on the total synthesis of diarylheptanoids are given in the respective sec tions.
